Dangerous Christmas gifts of 2008

A host of potential Christmas gifts were collected under a tree by the Trading Standards Institute last year. All were either counterfeit, dangerous, or both.

Some of the Christmas Gifts had electrical faults, while a scooter had sharp edges and its handlebars fell off.

There were Doctor Who fake toys, fake branded goods such as bike jackets, shoes and electric guitars.

However, the biggest concern was with children’s toys.

The bears shown in the picture above are contaminated with lead and chromium and pose a real danger to children at what should be a magical time of year.

US Customs and Border Protection Intercept Dangerous Teddy Bears

In March 2009, the Miami International Airport Trade Enforcement Team seized 3 cartons of merchandise containing teddy bears manufactured in China.

During a routine inspection, the Customs and Border Protection officers noticed that the glass eyes on the bears were not securely attached and that they could become loose, posing a chocking hazard to young children.

16 samples were sent to the Consumer Product Safety Commission for further testing and evaluation where they were found to be in violation of the Federal Hazardous Substance Act for small parts requirements.

On the back of this testing, the entire shipment of 240 bears was seized.
