Teddy Bear Back on Earth

Terence the Teddy Bear

Daredevil teddy bear Terence has made it back to earth in one piece after a fur-raising trip into space.

The cuddly toy from Cumbria has been blown out of a cannon and been taken on a tour of Basra with the RAF.

But on Wednesday he notched up his greatest achievement to date after being a guest on board SpaceShipOne when it flew 62 miles into space.

Terence is on a mission to raise cash for the Great North Air Ambulance and is due to be auctioned off.

The craft, belonging to aviation legend Burt Rutan, was only on its second spaceflight and it dramatically rolled over more than two dozen times during the mission.

But after reaching sub-orbital space, the pilot regained control and guided it safely back to earth.

Chief executive of the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), Graham Pickering, said: "We are delighted that Terence has made it back down to earth safely.

"The craft is due to go up for a second time within two weeks and we are hoping Terence will be there highlighting our cause."

GNAAS, which needs charitable donations of more than £2m a year, has three air ambulances based at Appleby, in Cumbria, Durham Tees Valley Airport and in Blyth in Northumberland.

Since May, Terence has spent time with members of 100 Squadron based at RAF Leeming in Basra, Iraq, and at airshows with performing fighter planes.

SpaceShipOne is the world's first private spacecraft, and is competing for the prestigious $10m Ansari X-Prize space travel accolade.
