Lulu the teddy bear flies solo around the world

A globetrotting teddy bear is finally enjoying picnicking back in the loving arms of her five-year-old owner in Co Antrim reports the Belfast Telegraph.

The 'Bananas In Pyjamas' TV character teddy Lulu just made it home to the province last week after a transatlantic adventure took her from the vineyards of the Loire and Vendee in France to Vancouver on the Pacific coast of Canada, via a service station near Birmingham.

Young Beth McVeigh, from Raloo Village near Larne, is now intent on keeping her wandering teddy on a tight rein, after countless anxious hours and sleepless nights fearing that her favourite toy was lost forever.

The McVeigh family had travelled to France at the end of June for a family holiday and as Beth and Lulu - a gift from granny - were inseparable, the teddy went too.

Driving back home in mid-July they had stopped off at services off the M6, near Birmingham, and it was only when they were unpacking the car back in Raloo that they discovered that Lulu wasn't with them.

Beth's mother Sarah said: "Luckily we had a receipt from the services station and when we telephoned to enquire we couldn't believe our luck when the girl said a teddy answering the description had been left by the check-out."

It was arranged that the toy would be mailed to the McVeigh's address and the family looked forward to being reunited with Lulu within a matter of days.

But they hadn't counted on a misheard postcode - instead of 'BT' the parcel had been marked 'BC' for British Columbia - and so Lulu was flown across the Atlantic and over the North American continent, all the way to Vancouver.

Mrs McVeigh continued: "We tried to forget about Lulu, but it was all so frustrating because we had managed to track her down and then lost her again.

"When Lulu finally arrived in a Jiffybag it had a Vancouver customs stamp on it," added Mrs McVeigh.

"Now that we've got her back we're determined she won't be going off on her travels again."
